PowerShot Model History

A tale of European model introductions.

Winter CES JAN/2000
PowerShot S20PowerShot S20 announced to the visitors at Winter CES in Las Vegas. With this model Canon has now demonstrated it's commitment to produce models with the latest high pixel count. The PowerShot S20 is Canon's first 3+ mega-pixel model, but otherwise it's largely the same as the PowerShot S10 from September last year. Expectation is that the S20 will be available in Europe from March/April time.
IFA 99
PowerShot S10 announced to the visitors to IFA fair in September. The PowerShot S10 is Canon's first 2 mega-pixel model and is even more compact than the A50. Also this is Canon's first camera with USB connection for rapid downloads.
JUN/99
Canon's first mainstream mega-pixel camera the PowerShot A50 is announced for Europe. In essence the A50 is an A5 Zoom with a 1.3M pixel sensor. Deep in the cameras menus the DPOF standard for print orders is employed.
JAN/99
Canon introduced the PowerShot A5 Zoom in Europe. Although it's bascically only a zoom lens added to the PowerShot A5, the new model introduces some improved functionality, and some new picture taking possibilites with slow shutter mode, and manual white balance controls.
DEC/98
The long awaited Pro70 starts shipping in Europe.
CeBIT 98
PowerShot A5 and the PowerShot Pro70 digital cameras. Both models addressed the weaknesses of previous products, but continued to build on the Canon strengths - image quality and complete solutions in the box.
CeBIT 97
The PowerShot 350 a VGA class camera gave Canon a presence in the lower end of the market. This new camera was markedly different from the PowerShot 600 as it featured LCD viewfinder only. Also the PowerShot 350 was significantly smaller than the PowerShot 600 model. However Canon still kept rechargeable batteries and charger as standard, but the camera used CompactFlash cards to store images. This camera included MAC and PC software in the box for the first time.
Photokina 96
PowerShot 30T a digital camera with a difference - it was a PCMCIA card. The 320x240 pixel resolution could be used in still and video modes with even interpolation to give 640x460 images when required.
CeBIT 96
PowerShot 600 was announced to the European market at the CeBIT exhibition in Hannover during March 1996. Later that year at Photokina it was awarded the prestigious EISA award for European Digital Camera of the Year 96-97. As a first step into the world of digital cameras the PowerShot 600 offered high resolution (570K pixels) huge storage capacity, rechargeable battery pack and excellent image quality.
